【注】摩根“环海”图书馆藏在麦迪逊“神赐之子”大道与36街的交角，外表像一座文艺复兴式的石砌宫殿，沉稳、安静，不急着向路人开口。推开那扇厚重的铜门，世界瞬间换了一个频率——外面的车声被隔绝在几层石墙之外，里面是书籍、纸张、旧墨和木头混合的气息，像时间在这里放慢了脚步，让人忍不住也把脚步放轻一些。

图书馆的主厅是整栋建筑的心脏。穹顶高耸，光线从半透明的天窗均匀地洒下来，落在三面环绕的落地书架上。书脊上的烫金字在幽暗中闪着细碎的亮光，像被谁小心擦拭过很多次。玻璃展柜里躺着那些如雷贯耳的名字——莫扎特的乐谱、贝多芬的手稿、狄更斯的小说章节、王尔德的信札。它们不是复制品，是真迹。那些纸张已经泛黄，边角卷起，墨迹褪成褐色，可笔画间的顿挫还在，仿佛书写者刚刚放下笔，起身去倒了一杯茶。我弯下腰凑近去看莫扎特的一页乐谱，音符密密麻麻，涂改的痕迹清晰可见——他写错了几个音，划掉，在旁边重新画上，没有一丝犹豫。我忽然觉得，这些手稿最动人的地方，不在于它们的完美，而在于它们的来不及完美。

站在那盏黄铜台灯下，我忽然意识到，摩根先生收藏这些，不是为了炫耀，也不是为了投资。他是真的怕它们没了。怕莫扎特的那几笔涂改被时间吞掉，怕王尔德写在信纸边缘的一句俏皮话再也无人读到。他用金钱买下时间，用建筑为它们造了一座不会被风雨侵蚀的洞穴。我伸手想摸一下书架，指尖快要碰到那排烫金的旧书脊时，又缩了回来——不是怕脏，是怕惊动了那些沉睡了100多年的字。它们认得莫扎特的手指，认得狄更斯的羽毛笔，认得王尔德低头时投在纸上的影子。而我一个过路人，不该那么随便地碰它们。可就在那一刻，我觉得那些纸张也认得我——它们见过太多像我这样的人，匆匆来过、屏息驻足，然后带着一点说不清的东西转身离开。那点说不清的东西，大概就是我此刻站在地铁口、握紧衣领走向暮色时，觉得自己比进来时重了一点的原因。
