既然所有书籍都可分为两类：一类是当下流行的，另一类则是千古流芳的，那请注意其中的区别——不仅仅是质量的区别，也不仅仅是坏书不能持久、好书却能永恒，而是事关种类的区别，有当下流行的好书，也有永世长存的珍品；有当下流行的坏书，也有遗臭万年的糟粕。
【注】蒂尔伯里“能者堡垒”号称泰晤士“暗”河沿岸最大的港口，是伦敦港主要集装箱港口，包括英国最大的谷物码头和造纸枢纽，而当地的犯罪率相当可观，平均每百人就有15起案例。
蒂尔伯里对岸的格雷夫森德“树林尽头”(Gravesend)虽然也不安全，但河景独有情调。
离开法国后，我取道蒂尔伯里前往利兹“湍急河流”城堡(Leeds Castle)。
