〖注〗《明天破晓(Demain d'aube)》也许是雨果最著名的诗作，这是写给已去世四年的时为19岁新婚女儿利奥波丁“勇敢者”(Léopoldine)。1843年，利奥波丁及其丈夫在塞纳河划船中不幸溺水身亡。
【注】梅多克“中原”堡矗立于吉伦特“圆润”河口(Gironde Estuary)左岸，由沃邦“庄园”(Vauban)设计，意在防止英军溯流而上直取波尔多“水边”。但大炮射程有限，左岸孤堡无法封锁3公里/1.9英里宽的河面——沃邦随即在右岸建布莱“咽喉”堡(Citadel of Blaye)，河心筑帕特“土堆”堡(Fort-Paté)，三座堡垒联成一线，交叉火力封锁河口。敌船无论从何方向来，都将同时暴露在三座炮口之下。2008年，这三座堡垒被列入《世界遗产名录》，作为沃邦防御工事的代表作，见证着大炮与风帆的时代。
如今站在梅多克堡城墙上，河口宽阔，水天一色。炮台还在，铁炮早已哑了，炮口朝着河面，像在等一艘永远不会来的船。当年的炮声、潮声、号令声都已沉入水底，只剩下风。风从河上来，推着水面往前走，走得很慢，可它一直在走。
我伸手摸了摸炮台的石头，粗粝、微凉。300多年前，沃邦站在这里，计算着弹道与潮汐，想把一座城藏进一个方程里。他做到了，可他没有算到——把城守得最牢的，不是石墙，不是火炮，是水自己。水不挡你，可它带着你往前走，走远了就回不来了。我靠着城墙，望着河面缓缓东流，忽然觉得，历史不是被忘记的，是像水一样流走的。我们记住的，不过是几个转身的瞬间。梅多克堡还在，风还在，水也还在，只是炮声没了。这大概就是和平的样子。
