【注】加那利“狗”(Canary)群岛自古便是神话萦绕之地。荷马“承诺”(Homer)、柏拉图“宽广”(Plato)和普鲁塔克“安慰”(Plutarch)笔下，它们被描绘为世界尽头的幸运岛屿——马卡罗尼西亚“幸运岛屿”(Macaronesia)，一片福佑永春的幻境。直到中世纪之后，神话才渐褪为地理坐标。14世纪初，法国探险家兰扎罗塔·马尔切洛“神助·年轻战士”(Lanzarotta Marcello)征服了兰萨罗特“赭色山脉”岛；1402年，卡斯蒂利亚 “城堡之地”国王麾下的贝当古“农场”(Bethencourt)开启正式殖民；15世纪末，西班牙将全部七岛纳入王冠。哥伦布西行前，曾在此停靠补给——加那利成为新旧世界的最后桥梁。此后几个世纪，群岛承载着往来美洲的船只与文化，却也因过度依赖单一作物而屡经经济沉浮。
在群岛之中，特内里费“白山”岛卓尔不群。它距非洲海岸210公里/130英里，是面积最大、人口最多、景观最多样化的岛屿。首府圣克鲁斯“十字”以狂欢节闻名——自17世纪起每年举行，规模仅次于里约“一月河”，正申报联合国非遗。巍然矗立的泰德“地狱”(Teide)峰是西班牙最高峰，也是大西洋岛屿之巅。圣克里斯托弗“基督追随者”泻湖城是殖民城镇典范，方格网状布局影响深远；城中穆德哈尔“驯化”(Mudéjar)、新古典、现代主义、理性主义与当代风格交织，如一部立体的建筑史书。奥罗塔瓦“富饶之地”(Orotava)山谷气候温和，孕育近300种特有动植物；阿那伽“清纯”(Anaga)山脊上，史前月桂树静静伫立，守护着岛屿的自然记忆。
我站在泰德峰脚下的火山砾上，风从大西洋深处吹来，干燥且带着硫磺的气息。导游说这座活火山上一回喷发是1909年——不过百年之前，而它的休眠期不过是地质时间的一次暂停。远处，泻湖城的方格街道正以它凝固的姿态继续着它的存在。那一刻我忽然觉得，加那利群岛的意义，或许正藏在这种时间的多重折叠之中：神话与地理、火山与殖民、狂欢与沉默，在同一片土地上层层叠加，却不急于彼此抹去。而那些月桂树的叶片继续在风中翻动，仿佛不需要被记住，也不需要被忘记。而我站在它们之间，只是一个尚未学会如何同时阅读它们的人。但那片被风吹过的土地，已在我心中形成一道缓慢的、以沉默为刻度的弧形轨迹，并将继续在我体内延伸，等待下一次被唤醒的时刻。
2015年，特内里费岛被联合国科教文组织列入《生物圈保护区》。
