AA → World-Instance → RA / AR → RR

AA IS and IS NOT.

World-Instance?

物自体是现象背后的“自身”;

物自体是认识无法穿透的界限;

物自体仍然面对“它是什么?”的问题;

AA IS and IS NOT.

    # The Absolute Absolute and the Thing-in-Itself: On the Beyond That Speaks

The Absolute Absolute (AA) first presents itself as the Understanding takes it: as that which lies further back than any ground. Kant's thing-in-itself (*Ding an sich*), for all its unknowability, still stood in relation to appearance, and so still belonged to the order of things. AA is set over against it as what no longer belongs to that order. AA is not the hidden object behind the object, and not the first cause at the head of the series. It is the point at which explanation stops trying to turn its ground into one more thing needing explanation. Every predicate determines, every determination relativizes, and so the Absolute must be kept free of predicates. It can be indicated only by the formula in which language admits its own defeat: *AA IS and IS NOT.*

But precisely in keeping itself free of determination, AA acquires determination in abundance. It is *not* a thing, *not* a substance, *not* the deepest layer of matter, *not* a first cause, *not* a more mysterious thing-in-itself. Each of these negations is determinate (*bestimmte Negation*): each says exactly what AA excludes, and through that exclusion says what AA is. What was to stand beyond all predication emerges from the series of denials as the most thoroughly characterized concept in the whole account. It is prior, non-objectifiable, the termination of ontological explanation, the condition of the World-Instance. The negative way has become a doctrine. And the formula in which the Absolute was to exceed language turns out to be the first page of the Logic itself. Pure Being, taken in its complete emptiness, is indistinguishable from Nothing. Each passes over into the other, and the truth of both is Becoming (*Werden*). *IS and IS NOT* is not the boundary of thought. It is thought's first movement.

AA therefore shows itself to be not before the World-Instance but in the World-Instance's own arising. The arrow in the schema *AA → World-Instance* is not a relation between two terms. It is Becoming, the unrest of IS passing into IS NOT and back, and this is the World-Instance in its emergence.

Yet this result, taken by itself, destroys what AA was introduced to accomplish. If the Absolute is only the world's own becoming, it has been placed inside Reality as one of its moments. The Understanding's question then returns with full force: why is there this becoming at all? The regress that AA was meant to end resumes, now charging the dialectic with having reduced the Absolute to the Relative. That is exactly what Instancology foresaw when it said that to make AA into "something" is to make it relative. The objection belongs here, in this stage, where the Absolute has been identified with the process and the process still stands before us as a given fact awaiting its ground.

*Addition.* Kant wanted to examine the faculty of knowledge before knowing anything, which is like wanting to learn to swim before going into the water. Instancology does not repeat this mistake; it goes into the water willingly. But it would like to name what lies beyond the water while staying dry. The one who draws a line around the unsayable must stand somewhere to draw it. Wherever he stands, the line has already been crossed.

The limit that is known as a limit is, for that very reason, already surpassed. The Understanding looks for the termination of explanation in a beyond, and a beyond that stays beyond is only the bad infinite: a boundary endlessly pushed back, forever facing the finite and therefore itself finite. The true infinite does not sit at the far end of the series. It is the series closing back on itself, the whole that grounds itself by including its own moments. Explanation ends not where it meets a ground that cannot become an object, but where the ground grasps itself as the movement of its own objectifying and returns from that objectivity to itself. What the Understanding feared as the Absolute collapsing into the Relative is, in truth, the Absolute's own act of self-othering. The Relative is the Absolute outside itself. The Absolute is the Relative gathered back into itself. The Absolute is not a presupposition. It is essentially a result.

This brings the beginning back, now posited. Instancology was right that AA is not a more mysterious thing-in-itself, but for a reason deeper than the one it gave. The thing-in-itself is the empty abstraction that remains once everything has been taken away. Hegel called it a *caput mortuum*, the residue after distillation, and the easiest of all things to know, since there is nothing in it. AA escapes that fate not by standing further off, but only by refusing to stay off at all. Its *IS and IS NOT* was never a confession that language fails. It was the Absolute speaking in the only tense proper to it, the tense of movement.

Whoever says the Absolute cannot be said has already begun to say it.
