Strengthening Academic Centers and Institutes to Address the Global Backlash Against Sexual and Reproductive Health: An Urgent Editorial Call to Action

[Editorial Preface] The field of sexual and reproductive health (SRH) stands at a paradoxical moment. On one hand, the past five decades—since the institutional emergence of modern sexology in the 1970s—have witnessed unprecedented growth in academic centers and institutes, scholarly journals, professional organizations, and global collaborations. On the other, this progress is increasingly threatened by a coordinated and well-funded backlash targeting sexual health, gender equality, rights-based frameworks, and scientific inquiry itself.

Recent developments include restrictions on SRH education and research funding, legislative interference, censorship of words related to gender and diversity, removal of databases, targeted harassment of scholars, and the proliferation of misinformation undermining scientific consensus. These dynamics underscore that institutional strength, not just individual scholarship, is now central to resilience.

This editorial argues that academic centers and institutes must move decisively from passive knowledge producers to active, resilient, and globally connected defenders of sexual health and rights. Building on longstanding leadership in the field and contemporary institutional experience, we propose a multi-layered strategy to strengthen academic and institutes in the face of rising political, ideological, and social resistance.
