Economists in US are sometimes classified as salt water and fresh water. Fresh water economists, mostly from Chicago, favor less government meddling in economic activities. Salt water economists, from the coastal region, favor more government participation in economic activities. Why the difference?

One reason might be job opportunities for the economists. Salt water regions are closer to DC. If government is more active in regulating economic activities, there will be more opportunities for salt lake economists in the government. Fresh water economists, living further away from DC, benefit less. They are less inclined to favor active government.
