Dear President Xi Jinping and the Chinese Government,

We, a group of professors, students, and alumni from Harvard University and Stanford University, write to urge you to grant Dr. Lin Chen—Harvard PhD (1994) and Stanford MS (1989)—the right to publicly respond to allegations made against him by China Youth Daily in 2002, a right he has been denied for over two decades.

In May 2002, Dr. Chen, an accomplished scholar, was invited to lead a private university in China. Shortly thereafter, China Youth Daily published a series of articles falsely alleging that he fabricated his academic credentials and personal experiences, including a claim that his Harvard PhD was “fake”—a falsehood later disproven by Beijing Youth Daily. Yet, Dr. Chen was denied any opportunity to reply publicly, and further media scrutiny was suppressed. For more than twenty years, he has been silenced within China, forced into exile, his otherwise brilliant career ruined and reputation tarnished.

This denial violates fundamental rights enshrined in international law, including Article 1(3) of the UN Charter, which promotes universal respect for human rights and dignity; Article 10 of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, which guarantees a fair and public hearing; Article 19 of the same Declaration, which upholds the freedom to express opinions; and Article 14(1) of the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights, which ensures the right to a fair and public defense against accusations. By silencing Dr. Chen, the Chinese Communist Youth League and its mouthpiece, China Youth Daily, have undermined these globally recognized standards.

We respectfully call on you to rectify this injustice. Allow Dr. Chen to speak publicly in response to these allegations, whether through a state-approved platform or other means. His enforced silence, spanning over two decades, must end. The press should serve truth, not suppress it. We urge you to act now in accordance with fairness and international norms.

Sincerely,
