Red blood cells carry oxygen. It will be natural for red blood cells to use oxygen in their metabolism. But they don’t. Red blood cells don’t have mitochondria. They use anaerobic respiration.

Without mitochondria, red blood cells have very simple structure. Their bodies are very flexible. They can squeeze through tiny capillary blood vessels.

Red blood cells, carrying oxygen everywhere, don't consume oxygen themselves.
