Canada: US’s de facto colony or 51th state

Canada’s domestic policies are mainly controlled by US to advance US interests. For example, Northern Gateway pipeline could provide easy access to the international oil markets. But it was never built due to US influence. As a result, Canadian oil is mostly sold to the US market, at a steep discount to the international market. By all means, Canada is a de facto US colony.

Then Trump proposed to turn Canada into the 51th state of America. In this way, Canadians at least gain roughly equality with Americans. But somehow, most Canadians are extremely angry, without realizing that current Canadian affairs are largely dictated by the US, for the US. 

It can be argued that Canada sells itself cheap if merging with US. Just look at Alaska. US gains so much by possessing Alaska. But then, Canada does nothing sitting on the vast and resourceful land.  Alaska style exploration and extraction of resources is banned in Canada, probably to save the resources for future US consumption. Most Canadians gain nothing from the vast amount of resources in Canada. By turning Canada into a US territory, Canadians might gain some small crumbs from resource development, which is better than nothing.
