写在女儿生日卡上的话

Dear Daughter,

We are so happy and proud to bring you to this world. Over the past 30 years you have not only grown from a lovely baby to a happy and confident professional, you have given us so much joy and love. We would like to thank you from the bottom of our hearts!

We often discuss such a question: it is not those achievements that you have expended your intelligence and energy to achieve that make us most happy and proud, not the high quality commercial performances in the big theater accompanied by the big orchestra when you were only 16 year old, nor the MD degree you got from a top university at the age of 25, it is your honesty and humility that are rare among contemporary youth. No matter what achievements you have made, we have never seen you show a little self-righteous attitude. We have never seen you pretend to understand something you are not sure about. You are always so humble and realistic. This is something that most people in the world cannot do, including ourselves. A person’s good qualities are as important as his/her achievements, and most of the time more important.

On your 30th birthday, we wish you happiness, health, and confidence as you embark on your new journey.

    我们经常在讨论这样一个问题：最让我们开心和自豪的，不是你付出智慧和精力所取得的成就，不是你16岁时就在大乐团的伴奏下在大剧院中所作的成功的商业演出，也不是你25岁就拿到的名牌大学的医学博士学位，是你那种诚实和谦逊的品格，这在当代年轻人中是少有的。不管你取得了怎样的成绩，我们从未见过你表现出一丝一毫的自以为是，我们也从未见过你对没有把握的事不懂装懂。那种始终如一的诚实和谦逊，是世界上大多数人做不到的事情，也包括我们自己。一个人的良好品格与他/她的成就一样地重要，而且大多数时候更重要。
